Introduction

United Nations SDG NO. 3 aspires to ensure the health and well-being for all. In order to accelerate progress, and address new challenges, M-PESA Foundation works with strategic partners to identify and support the best strategies for improving health.

The Challenge

Samburu is one of the most marginalized counties in Kenya. Most maternal and new-born health indicators in Samburu are lower than the national average, especially because of the low numbers of skilled deliveries. Samburu County has 78 health facilities, out of which 59 are dispensaries and health centers. However, most facilities are hard to reach and are ill-equipped in terms of equipment and medical supplies.

The intervention

The M-PESA Foundation funded a five year holistic programme aimed at significantly decreasing maternal and new born health

morbidity and mortality rates in Samburu. Through a partnership with Amref Health Africa and PharmAccess Foundation the foundation funded the programme to a tune of Kshs 473,896,080. The programme entailed; improving health service delivery infrastructure; capacity building of health workers; enhancing community based information and education; and health care financing.

Impact

The Uzazi Salama programme has achieved a 75% Increase in utilization of maternity services i.e. pregnant women using ANC services. 3000 Community Health Volunteers have been trained not only in Samburu but in additional 12 counties under the Health Programme. 2,192 mother baby packs have been distributed under this programme. In addition, the referral support system of Samburu County has been strengthened through equipping the County health management team with an ambulance command center. There has also been a significant decrease in maternal and newborn health morbidity and mortality rates in the whole of the Samburu County.
